Overview

Following the success of our October 2026 WA Mining & Environmental Regulators & Industry Roundtable, Mines & Environment is pleased to announce the first Roundtable of 2027, taking the conversation into an important new area:The financial and accounting risks associated with mine closure obligations and relinquishment.

For mining companies, mine closure is not solely an environmental or regulatory responsibility. Closure obligations can carry significant financial consequences, particularly where rehabilitation has progressed but formal completion, regulatory sign-off or relinquishment remains outstanding.

Changing closure assumptions, evolving rehabilitation requirements, uncertain completion dates and residual liabilities can all influence financial provisions, accounting estimates, long-term financial exposure and corporate risk.

How can mining companies accurately recognise, manage and ultimately reduce closure liabilities when the timing and requirements for relinquishment remain uncertain?

This industry Roundtable will explore the intersection between mine closure, financial accountability and regulatory certainty, including the implications for mining companies, finance professionals, environmental specialists and those responsible for managing closure obligations.

Proposed discussion areas

  • Closure provisions and accounting risk: How changing closure assumptions, rehabilitation requirements and timelines influence financial estimates and liabilities.

  • The cost of delayed relinquishment: Financial implications where rehabilitation has progressed but formal regulatory sign-off remains outstanding.

  • Residual and long-term liabilities: Accounting and financial considerations associated with obligations extending beyond active mining operations.

  • Progressive rehabilitation and liability reduction: How demonstrated closure performance, staged completion and regulatory acceptance may influence financial exposure.

  • Multiple regulatory obligations: How State Agreements, Commonwealth requirements and overlapping approval pathways can affect the timing and certainty of liability reduction.

  • Financial governance and closure readiness: The relationship between environmental performance, closure evidence, regulatory certainty and financial reporting.

Discussion themes are indicative and will be refined in consultation with industry and relevant professional contributors.

Bringing financial, mining and regulatory expertise together.
