Peter McGough is an Australian geotechnical engineer with over 30 years of experience specialising in tailings management and mine waste
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Geological Engineering, First Class Honours) from RMIT University.

Peter has worked across the full mining lifecycle as a consultant, regulator, operator, contractor, and in-house advisor, with deep expertise in both technical delivery and governance.
He has contributed to the design, review, audit, or regulatory approval of more than 50 major tailings storage facilities across multiple commodities and jurisdictions.

His project experience includes work with leading mining companies such as BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals Group, Newcrest Mining, and Northern Star Resources, among others.

A recognised leader in tailings governance, Peter was the principal author of the Code of Practice for Tailings Storage Facilities in Western Australia, which established a strengthened regulatory framework for the sector.

Currently Director and Principal Consultant at PGM Geotechnical Pty Ltd, he advises mining companies on tailings, geotechnical risk, and regulatory compliance, and is known for his ability to engage effectively with stakeholders from site operations through to executive and board level.
