Dr Richard Turner  PhD

Psychologist | Innovation Strategist | Mining Safety & Mental Health Specialist | SANO Health

Dr Richard Turner is an innovation strategist, psychologist and mining industry specialist focused on advancing workplace safety, mental health and workforce capability across Australia's resources sector.

His diverse professional background spans frontline service in the Australian Defence Force, underground mining operations and Mines Rescue, providing him with firsthand insight into the physical, psychological and operational demands of high-risk working environments.

Holding a PhD in Psychology from the University of Newcastle, Dr Turner combines practical mining experience with academic research into safety culture, risk-taking behaviours, workforce mental health and the psychosocial challenges experienced by mining personnel.

His published research has examined the factors influencing safety-related risk-taking among Australian coal miners, as well as the workplace stressors affecting fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workers, including fatigue, limited workplace autonomy, separation from family and psychological distress.

Through his work with SANO Health, Dr Turner focuses on developing practical, industry-specific approaches to mental health awareness, early intervention and workforce resilience. His work includes Mental Health Response Training, designed to strengthen frontline capability through three key principles: Recognise, Respond and Refer.

Drawing on his operational experience and research background, Dr Turner advocates for evidence-based, practical approaches that equip mining organisations, supervisors and workers to recognise psychological risks, respond appropriately and build safer, healthier and more resilient workplaces.
